DAY TWO (B,L,D)

After a refreshing nights’ rest and a big Cuban breakfast you will be ready to explore Old Havana.  The faded and slightly crumbling facades that you see today in Old Havana are a nostalgic reminder of the earlier magnificence of the baroque and neoclassic architecture and style of this unique UNESCO World Heritage Centre.  The face of the city has changed dramatically in the last 500 years, since it was originally established by the Spanish around 1519, but Havana has not lost her charm and a tour of the Old Havana offers a delightful insight into the past of this city.  Not only will you see all the main sights, but you will be entertained by the sounds and atmosphere of everyday life going on all around you.  So, put on your walking shoes, grab your camera, and prepare to be amazed by this vibrant and exciting city.

Lunch will be taken at one of a new breed of family-run eateries serving some of the best food in the city.

In the afternoon it is time to learn more about Cuba’s most famous exports.

Your first stop will be the Havana Rum Museum, housed in a converted old Palace where you can see the entire production process for this valuable export.  Of course you will have the chance to taste some good rum in the Havana Club and also buy some to take home with you.  From here you will move on to the Partagas Cigar Factory where the mystique behind cigar making will be revealed, and you will find out why Cuban cigars are so revered.  Even non-smokers and teetotallers will enjoy the tour and get a deeper understanding of the history and culture of this fascinating city.

Start the evening cruising the streets in a 1950’s American Convertible. Your guide will explain to you the sights you will see. You will be chauffeured around some of the most famous areas of Havana including New Havana, Old Havana and the affluent neighbourhood of Miramar. This iconic drive is a perfect introduction to Havana, her beauty and her troubled history.

The car stops at one of Havana’s boutique Casa’s where you will be taken up to the roof-top and shown how to make the perfect cocktail. You will get the opportunity to make your own delicious cocktail and of course taste your creation while taking in the beautiful views.

We will then visit one of our favourite restaurants in Havana where you can experience delicious food and a great atmosphere. This is the perfect opportunity to ask your guide all those burning questions you might have about this unique part of the world.

There are numerous choices for evening entertainment and your guide will be happy to make recommendations and bookings for you.

DAY THREE (B,L,D)

Another great Cuban breakfast will have you ready and eager for your next Havana adventure.  We start the day with our amazing Hemingway Tour – the acclaimed journalist and writer Ernest Hemingway loved Cuba; he loved the relaxed lifestyle, the marvellous game fishing and the atmosphere, but most of all he loved the Cuban people, who responded by treating him as an adopted son.

Visiting Havana today is like stepping back in time to Hemingway’s years on the island – the cars still look the same, the gracious old buildings that he loved are still there, albeit a little crumbling and faded, and you can retrace his steps along the same avenues and cobbled streets he so enjoyed.  See where he lived and visit his favourite haunts – try his favourite cocktails and see where his most important work “The Old Man and the Sea” was written.  See Havana through his eyes and get to know and love the city just as much as Hemingway did.

Included on our Hemingway tour is a visit to “La Finca Vigía”, the former residence of the prominent American writer – Ernest Hemingway. Next stop is Cojimar (14km from Havana), where Hemingway was inspired to write “The Old Man and the Sea”. A short walk takes you to Hemingway’s statue, made from old anchors, props, and tools salvaged by local fishermen to cast Hemingway’s statue. Here, you’ll visit the restaurant Las Terrazas, the preferred Cojimar hangout of the author and the late Captain of his boat (Pilar); Gregorio Fuentes.

Lunch will be at another of our favourite Havana restaurants serving excellent genuine Cuban fare.

In the afternoon you will also visit Callejon de Hammel in central Havana. Callejon de Hammel is where the Cuban artist fraternity congregate, and is a wonderful place to experience day-to-day Cuban life. Located in central Havana, the alley is brightly decorated in Cuban sculptures, art and paintings. You might also be able to catch a glimpse of a dance exhibition or meet Lazaro Salsita, who opens his home to teach neighbourhood children the art of papier-mâché. Make sure you check out Local artist Salvador González Escalona’s neighbourhood makeover.

Finally you will also visit Havana’s beautiful (and under-rated) beach – Playas del Estes. Havana’s very own pine-fringed paradise, Playas del Este, begins about 18km to the East of the capital at the small resort of Bacuranao, before continuing east through Tarará, El Mégano, Santa María del Mar and Boca Ciega to the town of Guanabo.Playas del Estes is yet to witness the hyper development you will find in Cancún or Varadero, Playas del Este is still a popular tourist drawcard. See where all of Havana comes to play and relax on the pure white sands and clear Caribbean waters along the picture-perfect Atlantic coastline.

Tonight your guide will be on hand to help you decide where to spend your last night in Havana and make all the bookings.  You might like to see a Buena Vista Social Club performance or take a seat at the Parisien Cabaret. Drink a little rum, be dazzled by the view and vow to return to Cuba for more! Viva Cuba!

DAY FOUR (B)

Today is your last day in Havana, and you will soon have to say a sad goodbye.

If you have time, we recommend visiting one of Havana’s most famous museums. Depending on your interests you could try the Museum of the Revolution or the Museum of Fine Arts.

Your guide will be available today to help organise any last minute excursions or activities you would like to do, along with your airport transfer to depart Havana’s exuberant capital city.

Viva Cuba!
